About us

Welcome to our blog 👋

We are Jeroen & Rachelle, and we run Calheta Suites — a small-scale guesthouse in Madeira where peace, ocean views, and personal attention are at the heart of everything we do.

As hosts, we love helping you make the most of your trip to Madeira, which is why we share as many tips, guides, and local recommendations as possible through our blog.

Madeira is a wonderful destination all year round thanks to its mild climate, stunning nature, and numerous events. Each season has its own charm. Curious which month suits your wishes best?

Spring (March – May):

Flowers, green landscapes, and perfect hiking weather. Springtime in Madeira is especially colorful as the flowers are in full bloom. Temperatures are pleasant (averaging 18-22°C), ideal for walking along levadas or hiking in the mountains. You can expect the occasional rain shower during this time.

Important events:

  • Flower Festival (Festa da Flor) – Late April or early May: Beautiful flower parades, processions, and floral artworks in Funchal.

A perfect period for nature and culture lovers who prefer to avoid the heat.

Summer (June – August):

Celebrations, sun, and sea. The summer months are wonderfully warm (22-28°C), sunny, and lively. It’s high season, so there’s plenty to do, from music festivals to cultural events.

Important events:

  • Festival do Atlântico – Music, dance, and fireworks throughout June.
  • Regional holidays & village festivals Many local festivities in July and August, featuring food, music, and dance.

Autumn (September – November):

Wine, harvest, and pleasant calm. Autumn is one of Madeira’s best-kept secrets. The weather remains warm (22-26°C), but it’s much quieter. Moreover, this is the season for harvest festivals and wine.

Important events:

  • Wine Festival (Festa do Vinho da Madeira) – Late August / early September: Tastings, demonstrations, and local folklore.
  • Columbus Festival on Porto Santo – Mid-September: Historical commemoration of the explorer, with markets and parades.

Great hiking conditions, warm sea water, and fewer crowds.

Winter (December – February):

Christmas lights and mild climate. Madeira remains a surprisingly pleasant destination even in winter. Temperatures stay between 17 and 20°C. The holidays are celebrated grandly with lights, markets, and fireworks.

Important events:

  • Christmas Lights in Funchal – From early December: The city is magically illuminated.
  • New Year’s Eve Fireworks – December 31: One of the largest fireworks shows in the world, recognized by Guinness World Records!
  • Carnival (February) – One of the biggest carnivals in Europe, with colorful parades and festivities.
