When is the best time to visit Madeira?

Madeira is a fantastic destination all year round thanks to its mild climate, stunning landscapes and vibrant events. Whether you're planning to hike, relax by the sea or experience the island's festivals, every season has something unique to offer. Wondering which month suits your travel plans best? Here's what you can expect throughout the year.

🌸 Spring (March – May)

For many travellers, spring is the most beautiful time to visit Madeira. Flowers are in full bloom, the mountains are beautifully green, and temperatures average between 18 and 22°C (64–72°F). This makes it the perfect season for levada walks, mountain hikes and exploring the island's spectacular viewpoints.

Although occasional rain showers can occur, they are usually brief. In fact, this rainfall is what keeps Madeira so lush and colourful. Spring is our favourite season for hiking because nature is at its very best, temperatures are comfortable, and the scenery is breathtaking.

Major event

• Flower Festival (Festa da Flor) – At the end of April or beginning of May, Funchal transforms into a sea of flowers with colourful parades, floral displays and live music.

Perfect for: hikers, nature lovers, photographers and anyone who wants to experience Madeira at its most colourful.

☀️ Summer (June – August)

Summer on Madeira is warm, sunny and lively. Temperatures typically range between 22 and 28°C (72–82°F), while the refreshing ocean breeze keeps the weather pleasant. It's the perfect season for enjoying the beaches, natural swimming pools and boat trips along the coast.

Hiking is still enjoyable during summer, especially if you start early in the morning. The evenings are long, and villages across the island host traditional festivals and celebrations. We love setting off early ourselves, when it's still cool and peaceful.

Major events

• Atlantic Festival (Festival do Atlântico) – Throughout June, enjoy music, cultural performances and spectacular fireworks.
• Traditional village festivals – During July and August, many villages celebrate with local food, live music and folklore.

Perfect for: sunshine lovers, beach days, boat trips and a vibrant holiday atmosphere.

Tip: July and August are Madeira's busiest months. We recommend booking your accommodation and rental car well in advance.

🍇 Autumn (September – November)

Wine, harvest season and peaceful surroundings. Autumn is one of Madeira's best-kept secrets. Temperatures remain pleasantly warm, averaging 22 to 26°C (72–79°F), while the island is much quieter than during summer. It's an ideal time to explore Madeira at a relaxed pace.

This is also grape harvest season and the perfect time to discover Madeira's famous wine. Rain becomes a little more frequent in October and November, bringing lush green mountains and spectacular waterfalls. Hiking conditions remain excellent, and the ocean is still wonderfully warm. Autumn is one of our favourite seasons thanks to the quieter atmosphere and warm sea.

• Madeira Wine Festival (Festa do Vinho da Madeira) – Held in late August or early September with wine tastings, harvest celebrations and traditional folklore.
• Columbus Festival on Porto Santo – In mid-September, the island celebrates Christopher Columbus with historical markets, parades and traditional festivities.

🎄 Winter (December – February)

Christmas lights and mild weather. Even in winter, Madeira is a wonderful destination. Temperatures usually stay between 17 and 20°C (63–68°F), making it an excellent choice for a winter sun holiday. The festive season is celebrated with dazzling Christmas lights, cosy markets and impressive events.

Rain is more common during these months, especially in the mountains and on the north coast. However, southern Madeira often enjoys pleasant sunny days. The combination of mild weather and festive atmosphere makes winter truly special. Every year, we love being able to sit outside on a sunny terrace, even in the middle of winter.

Major events

• Christmas Lights in Funchal – From early December, the capital sparkles with thousands of lights and charming Christmas markets.
• New Year's Eve Fireworks – On 31 December, Madeira hosts one of the world's most spectacular fireworks displays, once recognised by Guinness World Records.
• Carnival (February) – One of Europe's largest carnivals, featuring colourful parades, music and celebrations throughout Funchal.
