We are Jeroen & Rachelle, and we run Calheta Suites, a small-scale guesthouse in Madeira where peace, ocean views, and personal attention are at the heart of everything we do.
As hosts, we love helping you make the most of your trip to Madeira, which is why we share as many tips, guides, and local recommendations as possible through our blog.
Calheta is located on the sunny southwest coast of Madeira and is one of the most popular places to stay on the island. Its combination of a pleasant climate, beautiful nature, a relaxed atmosphere and a central location makes Calheta an ideal base for a holiday in Madeira.
From Calheta, you can easily discover some of the island's most beautiful levada walks, impressive viewpoints, charming villages and the rugged west coast of Madeira. At the same time, you can enjoy peace, space and a relaxed atmosphere, away from the busier parts of the island.
And that combination is exactly what we love so much about Calheta. You can spend the day exploring the island and then return to a place where everything feels peaceful and you can simply relax.
Calheta is known as one of the warmest and sunniest areas of Madeira. Thanks to its favourable location, the sun often shines here while other parts of the island may be cloudy. This makes Calheta a popular destination for both sun lovers and active travellers. Calheta is also centrally located in relation to many of Madeira's highlights. Within an hour, you can reach almost all of the island's main attractions.
One of Calheta's biggest attractions is its golden sandy beach. Unlike most beaches in Madeira, this beach consists of soft sand that was specially brought in. Thanks to its sheltered location, the water is often calm and perfect for swimming or relaxing. Around the marina, you will find welcoming terraces, restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy fresh fish, local specialities or a drink overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
For hikers, Calheta is one of the best bases for exploring Madeira. Within a short drive are famous levada walks such as Levada das 25 Fontes, Levada do Risco, Levada Nova and the beautiful trails around Rabaçal. The impressive Paul da Serra plateau is also nearby. Here you will find countless hiking routes with spectacular views of the mountains, valleys and ocean.
What we personally love about hiking in Madeira is how quickly the landscape changes. You can be walking through the mountains in the morning and enjoying the coast later the same day. Staying in Calheta makes it easy to combine both.
Calheta has a relaxed and authentic atmosphere. You will find excellent restaurants serving fresh fish, espetada, local wines and traditional Madeiran specialities. Whether you choose an extended dinner by the marina or a small local restaurant, the hospitality is always part of the experience.
We are still discovering new places to eat ourselves and love sharing our favourite restaurants and local addresses with our guests. Our personal tip: simply ask us during your stay where we like to eat ourselves. The smaller, local restaurants are often the places where you can experience the atmosphere and flavours of Madeira at their best.
From Calheta, you can easily drive to popular destinations such as Porto Moniz, Fanal Forest, Ponta do Pargo, Jardim do Mar, Prazeres, Câmara de Lobos and Funchal. This means you never have to drive far to discover some of the most beautiful places in Madeira.
At the same time, you do not have to go somewhere every day. This is another important part of what we love about Calheta. You can combine an active day with a quiet morning, an afternoon at the beach or simply some time enjoying the view.
In our blog about the best things to do in Madeira you can discover the activities and day trips we personally recommend.
When we first visited Madeira, we immediately fell in love with the island. After exploring many different places, Calheta quickly felt like the perfect place for us to live and welcome guests.
The peace and quiet, the nature, the friendly local community and the views make this place special to us every single day. What we especially appreciate is that Calheta is somewhere you can easily slow down and relax, while there is still so much to discover around you.
That is why we think Calheta is such a wonderful place to stay: everything is within easy reach, yet it never feels like you are in the middle of the crowds. You can head out and explore whenever you like, and then return to the peace and tranquillity of Calheta.
